In order to maintain a safe and adequate blood supply in Lenoir County we need people now, more than ever, to consider donating blood. The Amerian Red Cross is making a plea for first time blood donors to give blood and asking that current donors give more frequently. Blood is perishable, so it is only through regular, voluntary blood donations that a constant, steady blood supply can be made available when it is needed.

Blood and blood products are used in traumas and emergencies, to treat burn vitims, people with cancer, anemia, sickle cell disease, and other blood related illnesses. It only takes a few minutes to make a difference in the lives of so many. Just one blood donation can save up to three lives.

 DID YOU KNOW...

. . . that every 2 seconds someone needs blood?

. . . that your single donation of whole blood may help 3 to 4 different people?

. . . that a regular donation is slightly less than a pint, which is only a tenth of your total blood supply?

. . . that you can donate blood every 56 days?

. . . that within 24 hours your body completely replaces the fluid lost dring donation and within eight weeks you will have completely rebuilt your iron and red blood cells?

. . . that blood cannot be manufactured?

. . . that there are four main blood types (O, A, b and AB, either positive or negative) and that your blood type is an inherited trait?
